I’m finally bowing to the inevitable…or seizing my luck with both hands.
The Tale of How I Found the SCA, or
Why Szarka Never Needs Help Finding New Projects, though she frequently likes company to entertain herself.
Four years ago, when I was involved with Readerville, I met a member online who was also a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The things that she described doing sounded like such fun, that I asked how one joined in the games. She said, ‘oh, there’s probably a chapter near you, look here and see.’ I did, but the web page I found for the Shire of Phoenix Glade hadn’t been updated in two years, and I thought – wayll, these people don’t seem very interesting. Darn. Chalked it up to living in the back of beyond, and set it aside.
This past Labor Day, Joann’s had a big sale. I happened to be wearing my newly finished Civil War corset, and got a few questions, as I frequently do. Only instead of, "is that vintage?" or "you really made that yourself?" they were "who did you buy such a long busk from?" The women asking turned out to be SCAdians, and although they met amongst themselves, they agreed that the local Shire had some problems, and I gave them my email address. Haven’t heard from them. Darn again.
First week of October, I was spending my Saturday afternoon knitting at my Local Yarn Store, as I usually do, and a woman came in who wanted yarn for "a 15th century hood." That’s it! says I to meself, the universe is screaming at you, you deaf bint, take the freaking hint. "Are you in the SCA?" I asked the hapless soul – who turned out to be Elspeth, and Elspeth explained that Phoenix Glade had decided to resemble its namesake, and there was a Grub and Garb the very next day. Ooh!! Drat. I couldn’t go. So I resolved to check out the website again. Lo and behold, it was entirely New And Improved. And there was a Yahoo!Group. I practiced lurking for all of two weeks, warned my husband, and emailed the hospitaller.
This blog is intended to be a History of my involvement with the SCA. While trying to figure out where to start my middle ages, I hunted for good SCA blogs, and come up empty-screened. Perhaps my story will help or encourage other SCAdians in their own fun.
