Post-deed pics

Well, I look tired, and this is what a linen kirtle/Gothic Fitted Dress looks like, now that it’s sort of done.  A wool one looks better. I’d like to put buttons on the sleeves, the fabric for the sideless surcote is still on the loom/spinning wheel, and that’s just plain cotton yarn lacing it inadequately.  (Sign of an A&Ser – apologies and excuses about area of specialization.)  But this is a very cheerful picture, despite the tired/unfinishedness/wrapping paper.  (I’d just gotten a lovely present from THL Theadora Perplexa.) Thanks, THL David le Ymagour.  (To see more of David’s pics of … Continue reading Post-deed pics

To Line or Not To Line?

The following is excerpted from my response to an email question from a sewing pal.  The context is that age-old question:  When constructing a supportive cote (Gothic Fitted Dress, Versatile Dress), should it be lined? My reading says that we don’t have extant ones that are lined.  We have illustrations of ones with another color on the inside, but there’s a popular medieval fabric weave (iridescent twill) that is one color on each side, so that could be that answer. My answer is ‘do what works’.  My blue linen cote isn’t; but my figure is very different from other ladies … Continue reading To Line or Not To Line?

Demo at Meigs Middle School

Just back from doing a demo at a local middle school – they had an all-day festival for all of the seventh grade, I think, and I have now said about 90 seconds worth of ‘how wool becomes fabric with these tools right here’ about 243 times.  At least.  And signed lots and lots of Passports into the Past. It was very fun, of course, because I love explaining this arcane fiber stuff that I do, and seeing oh, about 20% of the faces light up.  A few even come back for more. I also like educating the teachers.  Just … Continue reading Demo at Meigs Middle School

Wanted: Mirrored box

[Continuation of Greet’s Guy’s Garb series, AKA ‘what Greet wants and is willing to sew for’] I saw some adjustable mirrored boxes at War.  These are fairly simple wooden boxes, looked like poplar, unfinished, with a mirror set inside the lid with two small hinges.  I didn’t want my behavior to scream "I love this idea but I could do it better", so I didn’t take pictures, but here’s my drawing: They came in four sizes, small (8×10) and large (12×14), either 4" or 8" deep.  I’m guessing on all of these measurements from my memory – if you have … Continue reading Wanted: Mirrored box

Wanted: Bucket carrier bar thingy

[Okay, this is going to be a whole series of posts fleshing out the links on the Greet’s Guy’s Garb page.  Bear with me.]Theadora Perplexa (love her name!) and Eoin gave me two wooden buckets that I LOVE, and it immediately occurred to me that I’d like to look like this: (well, alright, with a happier expression on my face.) I do a huge amount of schlepping stuff at events, and am learning that I need some aids if I’m going to minimize the chiropractor bills afterwards.  This poor Norman woman looks like she’d like to learn the word ‘adjustment’. … Continue reading Wanted: Bucket carrier bar thingy

Introducing Greet’s Guy’s Garb!!!

I’m starting a new service/arts project.  Over the past year I’ve been given lots of fabric and other materials, much more than I can use.  At the same time, I’ve been noticing that many of my male friends are becoming dedicated fighters, but feel they can’t go to events because they lack garb.  Finally, I’d like to learn more about clothing types than I care to wear (or make Daan wear). Four birds with one stone:  I will make garb, both out of my materials, any more materials that are donated, or Guys’ client materials in exchange for kit stuff … Continue reading Introducing Greet’s Guy’s Garb!!!

Greet’s Guys’ Garb

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!! I, Greet, hereby open Greet’s Guy’s Garb, a clothes-making effort in service to my non-sewing compatriots.  Since I wish to encourage the learning of skills, I accept barter in lieu of Washington’s currency (see Wishlist below). (***NEW!  Download Garb Measuring Worksheet here. Download garb_measuring_worksheet.pdf ) [Please note: page under construction – if patterns or pics do not appear, check back later – I’m still collecting!] I have sewn a 14thc French outfit for my husband, a 16thc Saffron Shirt for a Highland Scot, and am working now on a Norman tunic for the 3rd Crusade.  Pictures … Continue reading Greet’s Guys’ Garb

Gulf Wars, 2008

It’s interesting how much I’ve learned in a year.  I’m not sure my experience last year (of having the top of my head blown right off) will ever repeat itself, but this year certainly was worth the trip if very different. First, the loot.  (Any war generates spoils, right?) From upper left: Silk organza for my 16th c Black Protestant hat, and machine bobbin lace for same.  Camel tropical-weight wool for a Tudor Working Dress.  Colored wool is for Coptic tapestry weaving.  The black thread is linen dyed blackish with only tannin and iron (cook linen in an iron pot … Continue reading Gulf Wars, 2008
