‘Dabbling and Dressing Up’: Vision vs Mission vs Strategy vs Tactics

These are the guiding lights for the blog Greet’s Middle Ages…and also an example of what I believe are important concepts for any endeavor, whether it be for fun, as GMA is, or for profit. I offer this explanation in a spirit of transparency, for what I am doing with GMA, and also as a reference for myself, so that I can check myself to see if I’m getting off-track, and ask myself why.

Craft materials are not groceries.

I've become fond of the blog "The Happiness Project". (No, I haven't read her book, but I'm sure it's lovely, if it's anything like the blog. Reading a couple of years of intermittent posts in which Gretchen explains the Truths of Adulthood, Secrets of Happiness, and Personal Commandments that she has found for herself has helped me understand that I can do this too. (I don't entirely understand why I have this reputation for intelligence when I can be really, REALLY slow about some things.) So…"Craft materials are not groceries." You know how groceries work.  You run out of eggs, … Continue reading Craft materials are not groceries.

For anyone who’s ever left a comment…

I promise I didn't mean to ignore you.  TypePad has evolved so swiftly, and spam comments (hiss!) proliferated so quickly, and I went back to school, that I just stuck my head in the sand re: comments.  I've figured out how to kill spam comments efficiently, and I'll look for some sort of notification setting, so I can tell when you lovely people talk back to me. A bit of blog housekeeping

Apparently relying on TypePad to forward blog comments to my email is a mistake. I apologize to all those commenters whom I haven't replied to…I try to respond to every comment, because I'd like GMA to be more than a brag sheet. On the flip side, GMA seems to have attracted enough traffic to make comment spam worthwhile in somebody's estimation, so I'll be adding the "check TypePad comments more often than every blue moon" to my todo lists. ———- Also, I've added a Google search box, which is supposed to search just this site when Google's crawlers get around … Continue reading A bit of blog housekeeping

A&S report, 1st quarter 2010

Caution: It's still long.  Most of this can be found in pictures and/or further discussion in previous blog posts; I'm too pressed for time today to link directly. Since Gulf Wars: Wove diamond twill yardage in imitation of the Birka type from Vinjum, Sogn, and Fjordane, Norway (fifth century). Warped loom for similar diamond twill trim, in various widths, with "pull-through" beaming technique. Attended Gulf Wars:  Actually wore Egtved Girl gravefind string skirt, even though all the loops on the bottom aren't bound yet.  Had nice discussion on Bronze Age textiles at RagnaRocks party. Took bookbinding class: Limp bindings of … Continue reading A&S report, 1st quarter 2010

This monkey is focused on A&S…

…unlike me these days.  Then again, I've managed to avoid being the target of the atlatl field lately. Right, so I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, I've just been turning my life upside down, moving in the midst of the holidays, and I'll get back to my normal post format soon.  I hope.  (My bookmarks overfloweth!) Recap, because A&S reports are due, and I shamelessly use this blog to keep track of what I do: Since I last posted (gah! two whole months ago!), I've: Practiced music (recorder and voice) with Oldenfeld's Ensemble (Trimaris), weekly.  Learned various … Continue reading This monkey is focused on A&S…

Sable Sword cloak patterns

As part of my job as Special Projects Deputy to the Costumer's Guild of Meridies, I've been trying to capture the projects that are being done.  Numerous people have been making Sable Sword cloaks, which are regalia for those individuals who have been named to the Order of the Sable Sword.   They are large hooded black cloaks, with a white center black panel, to show off the appliqued black sword at center spine, hilt up. Maudey made up eight kits, and put assembly instructions in them, but if we ever want any more, I thought it'd be good to … Continue reading Sable Sword cloak patterns
