Necklace from my Roman

This is the necklace that I wear with my Roman garb.  It's on a 1/4" grid. Mom made it for me, out of Swarovski crystals and glass, I think, for a production of the Nutcracker party scene when I was dressed in a poofy red satin dress complete with Dolly Parton wig.  As I didn't have, um, enough to fill out the neckline, the director asked me to come up with Serious Jewelry. I like it a lot, but wish it was done in amber or green jade…it would match more of my stuff.  Here it is with the Roman … Continue reading Necklace from my Roman

So apparently I have more of a voice than I thought…

I had a BLAST at armoring night on Tuesday.  One of those "SCAdians are the Best People" experiences. First, Jac took my empty plate away and put a sword in my hand.  Then when I declared that arm numb, she moved it to the other hand.  I like whacking a pell. Then I went inside and danced with baby Brooke (8 mos.) to the salsa music for a while – Brooke likes to dance in front of the mirror.  The cook noticed that "hey, you've got rhythm"…and then I had salsa dancing lessons in the kitchen. Finally Bastion got out … Continue reading So apparently I have more of a voice than I thought…

Weaving my own yardage

Ann commented: …you really need to weave your own fabric. If you do it with rectangles and triangle gores in the side, you'll need about 8 yards, but narrow–just a little over the width of your shoulders. Yup, this is definitely on my list.  Thanks for the numbers! I've been reading about 6thc North Sea cultures, and the shreds of weaves imprinted on the metal bling show diamond twills and linen repp…so that's my next loomweaving move, after I get the 5 yards of spin-to-doubleweave off the loom that's been there way too long. A bit of a problem with … Continue reading Weaving my own yardage

Sidelacing documentation for 12thc woman’s garment

From 12thCgarb: Greetings from Nadezhda Toranova, I was looking at the pictures posted by Katherine, and noticed in one of them, when I zoomed in closely and looked at the two women on the bottom… http://pics.livejournal.com/jillwheezul/pic/000sezrh/g34 Is that side lacing (or holes for side lacing) that I'm seeing? Her dress is colourless, but the red ink picks out a series of holes on either side of what looks like a slit. It seems like such a strange detail for the artist to depict, when the dresses are otherwise completely plain. Continue reading Sidelacing documentation for 12thc woman’s garment

Garb kudos at feast idea

From A&S50Challenge: We didn't have an actual meeting of the A&S 50 challengers at Lupercalia (held February 21 in Nicollet, Minnesota), but A&S Maven Kat did something that I thought was a great (and adaptable) idea for a smallish event. As the day progressed, she went around and tagged people with a bit of ribbon with "A&S" on the front, and a number on the back. As she pinned on the ribbon, she commented on a particularly interesting or authentic bit of the recipient's garb, and asked that they briefly describe that item for the folks during feast. Not everyone … Continue reading Garb kudos at feast idea

To Do list for Gulf Wars 2009

Gulf Wars is officially less than a month away.  I'm going for the whole week, for the first time, and will continue to serve Her Majesty Gwendolen as lady-in-waiting.  I'm not teaching this year, and hope to take a few classes. Although I've been sewing more for myself lately, and have been given two handmedown camp kirtles, such that I have lots of clothes now, I find I still have a lengthy sewing list for this year.  Here's the list, and the current progress – I'm not freaking out just yet. 4.  Four white shifts.  I'm making two the gathered-front … Continue reading To Do list for Gulf Wars 2009

GW 2009 Populace Badge Embroidery Project

I am helping HRM Gwendolen create embroidered tokens for Gulf Wars 2009.  This is a fairly large project and given the time constraints and the volume involved, I'm soliciting machine embroiderers' help.  I've posted eleven embroidery machine files, in various formats, for public download at my blog here:  http://szarka.typepad.com/sca/2009/02/downloads-for-machine-embroidery-meridies-populace-badge.html  If you're interested in helping, please email me, so I can keep track of how I'm doing recruiting, and include a mailing address so I can get black fabric to you. Thank you so much in advance.  ~Greet ——————UPDATE: Feb 17————– The tokens are to be sized approx. 4" x 24", … Continue reading GW 2009 Populace Badge Embroidery Project

Downloads for machine embroidery – Meridies Populace Badge

Various helpful people are interested in file downloads for the Meridian Populace Badge. PLEASE NOTE:  I don't have an embroidery machine, nor do I have the software necessary to create these files.  I am, however, coordinating an effort to produce a WHOLE LOT of embroidered tokens with the Meridian Populace Badge…they will be white thread on black fabric, like this: If you are interested in doing a bunch of these for the Crown's use at Gulf Wars, PLEASE EMAIL ME. I got a pal (who does have the fancy machine and the fancy software) to create a bunch of standard … Continue reading Downloads for machine embroidery – Meridies Populace Badge

Back on the mat

In recap:  I ended up ordering three new yoga disk sets.  Rodney Yee's "Advanced Yoga", Shiva Rea's "Yoga Shakti", and Baron Baptiste's "Yoga Bootcamp."  I've felt for some time that I wanted to broaden my yoga experience, to understand more about the various styles and types and personalities.  In short, it's time to apply some mental rigor, and not just the discipline of "get on the mat more often."  Which gets boring. I've watched some of "Advanced Yoga".  It's advanced.  The people who did that teacher training course that I didn't, they could do this stuff at the end.  Head balances with legs wandering … Continue reading Back on the mat
