Daan’s 14thc garb

So we all know what I’m making myself for 14thc garb.  But what about Daan?

He’s not already committed to Other Mundane Things for Gulf Wars in March – I would LURVE to get him there, so he can see my madness in context (of 4,000 other mad people).  After all, I’ve only been to about a hundred swim meets.

He needs clothes to wear.  His criteria:  That he not be hot, or too girly.  That his clothes be fitted to his athletic body, so he can show off.  My criteria: That they be documentable.

Historic Enterprises to the rescue!  (I’m sorry: this post is yet another unpaid advertisement for this worthy company, just because I’m impressed.  If you’re uninterested, come back tomorrow for finished Luttrell Apron pics.)

(This isn’t Daan.  This is what you see when you follow that link I gave you.)

So we have here, a Saint Louis shirt (1250), requiring oh, maybe 2 yards of handkerchief-weight linen.

14thc braies, from the ‘Four Seasons of the House of Cerruti’ (“Barley”), ‘Tacuinum Sanitatis'(“Rye”), which require maybe a yard of opaque linen – I may try these out of the heavyweight that I have now, and wash them a hundred times with sneakers.

Single leg hose as seen in 13th (Maciejowski Bible), 14th (Tres Riches Heures), 15th (Mantegna) century artwork.  Maybe I can get one leg out of a yard – pant legs eat up fabric on you in a sneaky way.

Fitted pourpoint – 2 layers of linen, looks like 2 yards total maybe, probably less.  Daan is not a large person – 5′-10", waist 30", chest 40", so I expect those totals to go down.

If he decides that he likes this notion, he may get a cotehardie and hood to go over this ensemble.  I need to find a good wool deal.

Boy, am I going to learn a lot this winter.

  1. If you can get Daan to dress up and come play, I should love to see it. The world needs more athletic men in hose & cotes.
I could barter/sell-for-cheap you some wool toward the cause. I have boxes full, and it might as well get used while I’m not having time to make garb for myself. The barter might be my wheedling you to knit me something uncomplicated, or sew something for me out of the remainder of the fabrics, –specially hose, which I need more of, or pourpoint (more practice for you).
Also I have a pair of wool hose which I would be glad for someone else to have; though men’s xl they’re still too narrow for my female-pattern thigh-fat. That’ll teach me to buy instead of making my own–even from Historic Enterprises. Daan is so lean they might fit.
Let me know if you would like to bargain about fabric or whatnot.
