That’s my new device, if the College of Heralds like it. It looks like this.
(I’m not sure about the precise nature of the waviness. Does it matter, from instance to instance, if it’s a bit different? Four humps, five? I would think not, if we’re judging on a readability-from-100 yards basis. We’ll find out.)
Oh, right, a name?
Well, since I ditched the Hungarian notion, and the Margareta stands, I went back to Daan’s family tree. "Gijsberts" is the oldest byname listed, and was most certainly the previous genitor’s first name, since they didn’t become Van der Loop until the end of the 1700s. It existed in the 15th century, according to St. Gabriel’s. So I’ll use that. I like Gs.
Pronunciation note: According to my Teach Yourself Dutch book (hush. I had it pre-SCA.) ij is pronounced like the e in mother. Dutch vowels are tricky – there’s a lot of differentiation that we don’t have in English.
So it’s Margareta Gijsberts that we need to listen for in court (ha!) if it passes. I submitted both the name and device at RUM this past weekend.
My understanding is you can make as few or as many “bumps” as you want. It’s called artistic interpritaion!! Sort of likemy spelling.
I like it. It’s clean and simple and the bees will be very useful marking our objects like a badge.
