To Do list for Gulf Wars 2009

Gulf Wars is officially less than a month away.  I'm going for the whole week, for the first time, and will continue to serve Her Majesty Gwendolen as lady-in-waiting.  I'm not teaching this year, and hope to take a few classes.

Although I've been sewing more for myself lately, and have been given two handmedown camp kirtles, such that I have lots of clothes now, I find I still have a lengthy sewing list for this year.  Here's the list, and the current progress – I'm not freaking out just yet.

4.  Four white shifts.  I'm making two the gathered-front type, and two the square-neck type, and two out of linen-cotton blend, and two out of linen-rayon blend.  That's one of each fabric and style.  Then I can figure out what my preferences are.  (Actually, I already know my preference is for 100% linen, the 2.8 oz weight from fabrics-store.com, but I don't have the money or the time to get that.  The blends were on sale, and they're laundered and ready to cut.)

1.  One underdress for my 6thc North Sea woolly.  I read in Owen-Crocker and Rogers that this might have been unbleached linen, so that's what I've made.  It's assembled, but lacks neckline trim and flat-felled seams.  I have Ideas about putting slashes in the front to enable breastfeeding (no, I'm not pregnant, but I think that persona should have anticipated it), but that can be handwork put off until last.  I did a weird thing with the hem on this…it's a good thing it's an underdress, or I'd have to put tags on the side saying "don't copy this, it's an experiment!"

1.  One blue tunic for Matthias Baig, called Peg.  Peg is an older fighter, a darling teddybear of a man whose ideas about garb are…"my colors are blue and white."  He has made me a folding worktable and a pair of pattens, so I have for him a royal blue tunic, with rustic trim on the neck in red and blue, which will also have white by the time I'm done with it.  It's assembled, needing only a tryon for hem and cuffs, and the trim attached and seams embellished.

1.  One blue linen cote with red silk buttons for Thomas Alfred, as the last part of his 14thc outfit, for which he has paid me with a schlager.  I'm stuck in the buttons for this, though Thomas warns me that his chest has gotten bigger due to working out.  I'm not happy to hear that, but I'll manage somehow.

2.  One dark gold wool cote for me, men's 14thc.  I have green chausses already, and need to cook up some longer braies.  I have the body of the cote basically assembled, except for the gores and the lacing.  Also needs sleeves.

1.  One black shiny pleather 14thc kirtle for me, for the Meridian Social on Wednesday night…Goth Night.  The pleather has been a learning experience…more in a separate post.  I've got the body assembled and laced, except for gores.  Still need sleeves.  And need to purchase a black organza veil and hem it.

That's ten garments.  I'm trying hard not to freak out.  I'm going to have to let myself finish the shifts by machine this time.  Maybe I'll make it up to myself later by embroidering them in some crazy way.

  1. You are officially a crazy woman!
But when that’s done, you really need to weave your own fabric. If you do it with rectangles and triangle gores in the side, you’ll need about 8 yards, but narrow–just a little over the width of your shoulders. It’s doable. Probably practice with a cotton one before you try linen.
Just because you need something to fill up the idle hours of your time . . .
