Going to Gulf Wars

I’ve decided to go to Gulf Wars.

Most immediately this means more garb construction, as I am not going to go through four days with two undertunics, and one overdress ONLY.  I’m not prepared for feasts (=dressy), nor am I prepared for cold, nor rain.  I feel I need the following additional pieces – if you think I need something more or different, please comment – I’m still very much a novice, here.

I’ve been given the advice that accessories are what make outfits look really good.  I’ll keep that in mind as I shop.

CLOTHES I NEED:
A dressy tunic, preferably real linen.*
Dressy hair covering.*
Non-dressy hair covering that isn’t Hungarian plaits.*
Sideless surcote – dressy.
Tie-on sleeves for my shortsleeved overdress – see Greet’s Garb, on the left.*
Warm cloak.
Waterproof cloak.

*I went to JoAnn’s on my lunchhour today, to see what was on sale.  Lucked out: Got a length of real linen, a beautiful snowpea green.  That’ll be the dressy tunic.  Also got a bit of rust-colored netting that will make a striking snood – I might make two, one for the barbette+fillet+snood look, with coiled plaits, and one as a coif, for tying over my hair left down.  Total so far: $42.

*I have a gorgeous piece of cutwork white lawn that I’ll use for the non-dressy hair covering – I like an illustration from The Tudor Tailor, that shows how to tie a headrail.

*I have sleeves half-done – just need to finish them.

I don’t have any ideas whatsoever for fabrics for the rest of it – I’m planning to make up what I’ve got now, and then try again when these are done.  For reference, here’s what I already have:

CLOTHES I HAVE:
Batiste white cotton undertunic, slightly short, but lengthenable.
Heavy cotton undertunic, embroidered, that can be worn alone.
Plaid overtunic, needs better laces.
Blue knit stockings – would like to dye these to a mulberry.
Red knit stockings.
Red crocheted cap.
Plait covers.
Leather everyday belt.
Knit tabard with hood.
Pumpkin wool shawl.
Knit peacock hooded mantle (not cowl) with dagged edge – under construction.
Shoes – Black maryjane clogs, appropriate for non-mud.
Shoes – Black laced oxfords, appropriate for mud.

  1. I knew I forgot something yesterday.
Try fabrics-store.com for linen (note that it’s fabrics with an “S”, not fabric). I used tons of their IL019 — a nice medium-weight linen–when I was sewing for the spanish mission. Mostly under $7 a yard and it’s 60 inches wide. And they have free swatches
