Trade: Viking Rus tunics for a trunk

Just for my A&S record:  I made Gregg a couple of tunics, according to what I learned in the early Rus class at Pennsic…

Gregg's tunics

Both tunics are linen – the under one is quite light, with red flat-felled seams, and the decorative hemstitching at neck and cuffs and shoulders.  The over one has dark green flat-fell stitches, and white giant herringbone.  I left the blue tunic's cuffs undecorated – they really should have something quite fancy on, but Gregg is unsure of what he wants.  Refinement for later.

The blip at the neck is the reverse side of a maker's mark that I'm putting on everything now; two capital G's confronte, and interlaced, for "Greet Gijsberts".  It resembles the little mustachioed guys on the Kentish button brooches.

In trade, Gregg made me this:

…a stacking Viking chest.  (not the best picture, sorry, Gregg.  I'll take better when I seal and decorate it.)

It's oak, so pretty heavy, but terribly pretty.  I decided against hinges, because the top makes a dandy lap desk.  It's 27" wide at the base, 18.25" tall, and 11.25" wide.  The compartment is 11.25" deep.  It holds enough clothes for a cold weekend, and makes a very nice seat, table, etc.

I'm told by people about my chair, that furniture was painted, even to resemble wood, so for this piece I'm going to seal it clear (pretending that it's painted to be woodlike) and then put some sort of linework on it.  I need to research what.  I want to do something similar with my vanity box, too.

I have this book

Celtic Art cover

which has all sorts of references and explanations how to do the fabulous spirals, knotwork, and other complex geometries, together with the various typographic hands and runework appropriate.  Also I've been collecting all sorts of pictures of museum pieces…I just need to sit down and have a quiet drawing day.
