Oldenfeld Demo at FSU

(Mom and I in respective early period wear – I've got on new amber/jet/silver necklace, new Kentish brooches from Raymond's Quiet Press, and my new standard brooch-closed tunic that I finished for Pennsic.  A full-length pic will be in the Current Garb Photo Album soon, and I'll discuss the gown more later.) The demo yesterday went really well, I thought.  It was funny to see Oldenfeldians in garb, since I see them so much outside of events.  (Entirely my own fault, since their events always seem to be scheduled opposite Meridian events that I am going to.  That's happening AGAIN for … Continue reading Oldenfeld Demo at FSU

Back from Pennsic-land.

(Greet and Julia in Kass McGann's shop – Reconstructing History) I had a wonderful time – I met wonderful people, learned things on purpose and not, tried things, and generally got more perspective.  Some of the things I learned: I can stop feeling nervous about my kit – I'm starting to feel more secure in my presentation.  Need a proper chair for evening hangouts, and a tent.  I want fancy boxes (27" wide at base) and some other camp niceties, but bins hidden from view will do for now.  I brought three times as many clothes as I used, but I managed … Continue reading Back from Pennsic-land.

Benefits of researching less

I had a powerful experience recently. Typically when I decide to make a thing, I do a little research to show me which of several design alternatives I should choose, and then I make it. Almost always, the thing comes out well enough that it inspires me to do some back-documenting, during which I learn that there were variables I didn't know, or context…I learn a lot.  The thing isn't museum-perfect, but I use it, and people like it, and tell me so, at which point I tell them all the stuff that's 'wrong' with it until I realize that I've passed … Continue reading Benefits of researching less

The genius at work – Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk

I don't think of myself as an artist. A creative person, sure.  I have creative skills, and I solve problems with creative thinking.  I think of myself on the craft side of the craft vs. art continuum, and that's okay.  My work doesn't make any sweeping statements about the human condition in this place and time, it just tries to bring useful and attractive objects and places into being, that weren't there before.  I draw and paint and weave and embroider and sew and knit and write and calculate and imagine…and all these skills come together into objects that are … Continue reading The genius at work – Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk

Gulf Wars 2009 recap

Longtime readers will know that Gulf Wars is an important event for me, not only because it's the biggest, most involved event I regularly attend, but because it's my anniversary event for my SCA participation…in 2007, my good friend Gabrielle Chantereau twisted my arm and said, "you really need to come to an event.  Come tent with me."  My life changed. Gulf Wars has been life-changing for me every year.  The first year was simply mind-blowing, about what the SCA could be for me, encouraging the particular craziness that I thought made me alone, and somewhat lonely in the world.  … Continue reading Gulf Wars 2009 recap

Sleeping bag silliness

The brother-in-law from the Cold Place decided that an appropriate response to my wishlist item "camping stuff for cold and dark" was a mummy bag.* I look like a giant grub.  I fear to contemplate all the hijinks that might be possible with a mummy bag. For some reason I'm thinking of Rock Band Grub…the other Gladians played Rock Band last Friday, in funny clothes which included kilts (though no shirts), and documented it online.  I was not there…having been at a family dinner…but Rock Band Grub could have been. ——————* I was thinking of a nice lantern, or a … Continue reading Sleeping bag silliness

Finally got the scissors on the belt…

Sorry it's taken so long, Maudey.  And of course it took all of five minutes to do, I have no excuse.  But it looks nice. For those clueless:  My 'official' apprentice belt was Maudey's apprentice belt, and she painted her Laurel's badge on it.  (Master Allan, a fleur-de-lis, in blue and gold.)  She suggested I could put her badge on it for me…8 months ago.  Maudey's badge is a pair of gold scissors. Back from Gatalop

I suck as a journalist.  No event pictures AGAIN.  Had way too much fun (but not as much fun as Her Majesty the Slip-n-Slider). However, here's some Sewing and Shopping evidence! The trim is 4 yards of lovely soft rustic stuff, bought from Andrixus the trim merchant, which will be my 12thc ceinture…remember, I like to have a green belt appropriate to whatever placetime I'm dressed in! The token is for my champion to carry, since I have one now, and ought to conduct myself accordingly.  I like my black bee, though am pondering whether next time I embroider her … Continue reading Back from Gatalop
