Gulf Wars 2009 recap

Longtime readers will know that Gulf Wars is an important event for me, not only because it's the biggest, most involved event I regularly attend, but because it's my anniversary event for my SCA participation…in 2007, my good friend Gabrielle Chantereau twisted my arm and said, "you really need to come to an event.  Come tent with me."  My life changed. Gulf Wars has been life-changing for me every year.  The first year was simply mind-blowing, about what the SCA could be for me, encouraging the particular craziness that I thought made me alone, and somewhat lonely in the world.  … Continue reading Gulf Wars 2009 recap

So apparently I have more of a voice than I thought…

I had a BLAST at armoring night on Tuesday.  One of those "SCAdians are the Best People" experiences. First, Jac took my empty plate away and put a sword in my hand.  Then when I declared that arm numb, she moved it to the other hand.  I like whacking a pell. Then I went inside and danced with baby Brooke (8 mos.) to the salsa music for a while – Brooke likes to dance in front of the mirror.  The cook noticed that "hey, you've got rhythm"…and then I had salsa dancing lessons in the kitchen. Finally Bastion got out … Continue reading So apparently I have more of a voice than I thought…

To Do list for Gulf Wars 2009

Gulf Wars is officially less than a month away.  I'm going for the whole week, for the first time, and will continue to serve Her Majesty Gwendolen as lady-in-waiting.  I'm not teaching this year, and hope to take a few classes. Although I've been sewing more for myself lately, and have been given two handmedown camp kirtles, such that I have lots of clothes now, I find I still have a lengthy sewing list for this year.  Here's the list, and the current progress – I'm not freaking out just yet. 4.  Four white shifts.  I'm making two the gathered-front … Continue reading To Do list for Gulf Wars 2009

GW 2009 Populace Badge Embroidery Project

I am helping HRM Gwendolen create embroidered tokens for Gulf Wars 2009.  This is a fairly large project and given the time constraints and the volume involved, I'm soliciting machine embroiderers' help.  I've posted eleven embroidery machine files, in various formats, for public download at my blog here:  http://szarka.typepad.com/sca/2009/02/downloads-for-machine-embroidery-meridies-populace-badge.html  If you're interested in helping, please email me, so I can keep track of how I'm doing recruiting, and include a mailing address so I can get black fabric to you. Thank you so much in advance.  ~Greet ——————UPDATE: Feb 17————– The tokens are to be sized approx. 4" x 24", … Continue reading GW 2009 Populace Badge Embroidery Project

Downloads for machine embroidery – Meridies Populace Badge

Various helpful people are interested in file downloads for the Meridian Populace Badge. PLEASE NOTE:  I don't have an embroidery machine, nor do I have the software necessary to create these files.  I am, however, coordinating an effort to produce a WHOLE LOT of embroidered tokens with the Meridian Populace Badge…they will be white thread on black fabric, like this: If you are interested in doing a bunch of these for the Crown's use at Gulf Wars, PLEASE EMAIL ME. I got a pal (who does have the fancy machine and the fancy software) to create a bunch of standard … Continue reading Downloads for machine embroidery – Meridies Populace Badge

Sleeping bag silliness

The brother-in-law from the Cold Place decided that an appropriate response to my wishlist item "camping stuff for cold and dark" was a mummy bag.* I look like a giant grub.  I fear to contemplate all the hijinks that might be possible with a mummy bag. For some reason I'm thinking of Rock Band Grub…the other Gladians played Rock Band last Friday, in funny clothes which included kilts (though no shirts), and documented it online.  I was not there…having been at a family dinner…but Rock Band Grub could have been. ——————* I was thinking of a nice lantern, or a … Continue reading Sleeping bag silliness

Looking forward to Magna Faire’s feast

I see a trend.  Last year's Magna Faire feast was one of the best in my first couple of years' events.  I was so full, and it was all SO good.  Looks like I'd better start starving now for Saturday night… Sensei Kojin has come up with a wonderful menu, featuring dishes from the regions of the Danube River: First Course Bratwurst – Germany (assorted sausages) Kartoffelpuffer – Germany (potato pancakes) Tarator – Bulgaria (chilled cucumber and yogurt sauce) Piroshki – Russia (savory filled pastries) Bread Basket with Butters (rye, rustic white, pumpernickel) Kojin's Mustard Second Course Veprova á Pecené – … Continue reading Looking forward to Magna Faire’s feast

Finally got the scissors on the belt…

Sorry it's taken so long, Maudey.  And of course it took all of five minutes to do, I have no excuse.  But it looks nice. For those clueless:  My 'official' apprentice belt was Maudey's apprentice belt, and she painted her Laurel's badge on it.  (Master Allan, a fleur-de-lis, in blue and gold.)  She suggested I could put her badge on it for me…8 months ago.  Maudey's badge is a pair of gold scissors.
