Pryor Middle School Demo

Met Angus (who played bagpipes, carried a sack of various recorders, and spoke wistfully of finding other musicians in Phoenix Glade), sat with Jeannie (sp?) and Keena, and played figure-out-the-strange-tent with Gefn. My wheel was a big hit as usual, and one teacher brought her entire geography class to hear my spiel about different sorts of fibers having to be spun differently, and how drop spindles work versus flyer wheels or chakra wheels (They’re studying Ghandi, who advocated home spinning of cotton). Other participants did Scottish dancing and belly dancing and juggling. It was very festive, and I expect a … Continue reading Pryor Middle School Demo

Period Images debut

Behold, more new stuff on the right!  Scroll down. I’ve started a Photo Album for reference images.  I suspect I will need to divide these up somewhat in future – garb images and spinning images come first to mind.  But for now there’s only about six in there.  Including the only ‘Hungarian’ 15th-16th century artists that I could find on Web Gallery of Art , an amazing resource. I wonder if Typepad lets me link from a post to an image.  Well, I’ll be. Slick. Continue reading Period Images debut

Third lesson

Long range attacks and parries. I learned long-range attacks in a drill with an eight-year-old.  Got to wear a medium breastplate and a 38 front-close jacket.  Of course the kid kept poking me under the edge of the breastplate.  I’m not sure whether to look forward to being poked by an adult because they will have a better idea of distance (and therefore not poke as hard) or to be worried because an adult will have more strength.  Better check my non-bruise vitamins. Found the first casualty of my dance background.  I chassee forward, when kitted out and under pressure … Continue reading Third lesson

Rust shirt

I picked up a length of what I thought was linen at Gulf Wars.  I now think it’s linen-cotton blend.  At any rate, it’s a lovely rust color, and I’m now thinking it should be a shirt that either I, in rapier mode, or Daan, when he deigns to accompany me, could wear. Waiting on patterns to arriveNEXT STEPSRead patternsCut out and sew. Continue reading Rust shirt

Upcoming Projects

I’m facing a two-hour sit in a Uhaul place tonight (Daan’s car is getting a hitch put on), so between that handwork opportunity ™ and the demo at my old middle school tomorrow morning, things are a bit of a tizzy tidy this morning. First I gathered together all my fiber baskets and got a bit of alpaca on the wheel.  Merino sheepskin, check.  Loom, check.  ID tags for all the baskets – I’ll write them later today.  Visual Aid Banner about spinning – ack!  still not done!  Bingo!  Handwork for the opportunity.  Throw all Visual Aid illustrations with edging … Continue reading Upcoming Projects
