The A&S 50 Challenge

Found on Tavern Yard… The Society for Creative Anachronism celebrates its 50th year on May 1, 2015, and that will be cause for much celebration.  I am starting early, and I hereby invite you to join the party! Challenges have long been a part of Scadian culture, and I thought that a challenge of 50 things seemed appropriate for our 50th year.  Since years in the SCA are counted as Anno Societatis, (year of the Society,) or AS, and Arts and Sciences (the lovely canopy under which so many of my interests rest) is oft abbreviated A&S, the A&S 50 … Continue reading The A&S 50 Challenge

RUM 2007

(I swear this was a coincidence.  Me, Kyle, and Lavena, after court.) RUM was fun and interesting.  I liked the site very much, because the Lake Lanier area is surprisingly cool, and very beautiful, and it’s very nice to take a dip in the swimming pool after the end of classes. Particularly when you’ve spent an hour swinging a longsword dummy over your head in the sun. (I’m very sorry I don’t have a picture.  I would’ve loved to see what I looked like.  I need a photographer.) I took classes in Italian hair braiding, silk embroidery, Meyer’s rapier & … Continue reading RUM 2007

July 4th Painting Party

I have this crazy idea of how to decorate sheetwalls for our upcoming event, and Lavena decided the best way to get them done was to have a painting party.  We started at 10 am.  (I brought the sheets with the designs traced on already.) Old friends came. There was lots of food. Lovely new people visited from far away (Knoxville!), and their local relatives might like us well enough to come play again. There was a lot of painting, which people seemed to like.  (This is a good shot of this summer’s hairstyle on me, which was also popular … Continue reading July 4th Painting Party

Meridies Regalia

For anyone else who is frustrated by the lack of Geocities bandwidth assigned to the Meridies Bagatelle Pursuivant page (I find I can only click on a few links before the whole section rolls over and plays dead), here are the various regalia, organized by construction type. (I did this for my own sanity; do double-check any instructions with the official site linked above to maintain authenticity.) Fiber construction (I favor applique/embroidery over painting, but…): Download ArgentLancePennons.pdf – Black trigger fabric Download ArgentLily.pdf – Embroidered lily on black token sash Download CompanionateoftheBard.pdf – Painted design on black token sash Download … Continue reading Meridies Regalia

Update

I’ve been really busy – but I don’t have any good new pictures to show for it. I’ve done more flax spinning. I’ve done more tabby linsey-woolsey weaving with Midnight’s alpaca.  The first piece is nearly ready to come off the loom.  I’m really curious to see how it stands up to washing – if the alpaca ‘woolsey’ warp blooms within the linen warp, as I’ve heard can happen with loosely woven fabrics. I’ve done a bunch of knitting – one French Market bag is in the wash, felting, and the other just needs handles.  (The purpose of these is … Continue reading Update

Back from Kingdom A&S

I went to Kingdom A&S with Lavena and Melbrigda this past weekend. Yet again, I took no pictures.  (I’ve got to get over this ‘must not look like a geek with a camera’ thing I have – y’all are missing a lot.) It was Very Interesting.  Not just for the Arts and Sciences, which were fascinating in and of themselves (homemade warp-weighted loom, bowstrings twisted out of flax, lovely singing and bardic recitations, etc) but for what I’m learning about how the Society works. Up until now, my interest in all things working-class was getting in the way of my … Continue reading Back from Kingdom A&S

Bee boxes

[cross-posted on Front Step Design] I bought these bee boxes the other day. I only meant to buy two, because theoretically I believe in baby steps.  However, the universe frequently has other plans.  (See spinning, and weaving.)  They were at a junktique store, and the owner wanted them All Gone.  So I got ten bee boxes for $50.  (I would be happy to share.)  Obviously they need some work – I hope the frames are still acceptable to the bees. So, in the manner of things, information is starting to trickle in about beekeeping.  The blogosphere provided geek.farm.life’s podcasts about … Continue reading Bee boxes
