Mission San Luis

On the Tally trip this past weekend, we went to see friends (Eoin and Theadora) dance at the Mission San Luis. Now I had no idea there was a historical site this old in Tallahassee.  I went to graduate school there, and HAD NO IDEA.  And it’s right in the middle of town! If you’re in Tally, go.  The campus is wonderful, and apparently I should be forgiven for not learning about it sooner, since it’s only in very recent years that it’s been so well taken care of.  There’s a bunch of wonderful adobe buildings that are very cool … Continue reading Mission San Luis

Garden Check – May 2007

Here’s what’s happening in the garden – though I didn’t take pictures of all my babies, stupidly.  Also missing are the new arrivals – in Tally I bought a dwarf pomegranate, a dwarf quince, and a red hardy hibiscus/rose mallow.  They go into the ground this weekend, so I’ll take their portraits in situ. This is what Virginia Creeper is meant to do.  Make tomato cages.  Well, and turn red in the fall – but it can do both.  Here’s a second version. I only need about fifty of these, which will pretty well take care of any noxious vine … Continue reading Garden Check – May 2007

Heritage Museum – Saturday in the Park

UPDATE: We were in a local newspaper!  The very readable (only comes out weekly, so they must have time to weed out all the dumb stuff that the daily runs) Bay Beacon featured the following: (click to enlarge) Yes, that’s me with my mouth open.  Standard expression for a magpie, don’t you know? ****end update*** One of our little cities’ Heritage Museum has a craft fair fundraiser every year in the adjacent park.  The local shire was told that we could appear for free, and we might sell our own fundraiser crafts.  So here we are on April 28, 2007. … Continue reading Heritage Museum – Saturday in the Park

Pryor Middle School Demo

Met Angus (who played bagpipes, carried a sack of various recorders, and spoke wistfully of finding other musicians in Phoenix Glade), sat with Jeannie (sp?) and Keena, and played figure-out-the-strange-tent with Gefn. My wheel was a big hit as usual, and one teacher brought her entire geography class to hear my spiel about different sorts of fibers having to be spun differently, and how drop spindles work versus flyer wheels or chakra wheels (They’re studying Ghandi, who advocated home spinning of cotton). Other participants did Scottish dancing and belly dancing and juggling. It was very festive, and I expect a … Continue reading Pryor Middle School Demo

Third lesson

Long range attacks and parries. I learned long-range attacks in a drill with an eight-year-old.  Got to wear a medium breastplate and a 38 front-close jacket.  Of course the kid kept poking me under the edge of the breastplate.  I’m not sure whether to look forward to being poked by an adult because they will have a better idea of distance (and therefore not poke as hard) or to be worried because an adult will have more strength.  Better check my non-bruise vitamins. Found the first casualty of my dance background.  I chassee forward, when kitted out and under pressure … Continue reading Third lesson

Upcoming Projects

I’m facing a two-hour sit in a Uhaul place tonight (Daan’s car is getting a hitch put on), so between that handwork opportunity ™ and the demo at my old middle school tomorrow morning, things are a bit of a tizzy tidy this morning. First I gathered together all my fiber baskets and got a bit of alpaca on the wheel.  Merino sheepskin, check.  Loom, check.  ID tags for all the baskets – I’ll write them later today.  Visual Aid Banner about spinning – ack!  still not done!  Bingo!  Handwork for the opportunity.  Throw all Visual Aid illustrations with edging … Continue reading Upcoming Projects

Second lesson

Second lesson – Thursday of first week.Reviewed footwork.  Did drill again. Attacks:Close range attack = straighten arm.  Right of way discussion.  Distance drill with foils and masks.  Got to poke the teacher.(I wear a size 4 mask – of 5, and an XtraSmall glove.  Big head, small hands.  Shut. Up.) Noticed during the distance drill that:1)  It’s still weird to be allowed to poke someone with a sharp object – even when you filled out paperwork and wrote a check to qualify.2)  I’m lunging already, to correct my distance judgement.  Time for… Mid range attack = straighten arm  + lunge … Continue reading Second lesson

First lesson

First lesson: How to hold the foil.  How to stand en garde.  Salute.  Foil taken away.First position.  Second position.  En garde. Footwork.  Advances.  Heel first, stay very level.  Keep steps the same size.Retreats.  Back foot first, try to keep L-shaped position of feet – overcross backward is Hungarian. (I pointed out that any Hungarian bad habits are totally appropriate.  Was told not to do it anyway.  But nicely.) Drill: Opponents face each other across a counted distance.  One opponent leads.  The other tries to keep the same distance.  We practice on a tiled floor with 12" tiles, which is very … Continue reading First lesson
