Back from MGT – Award of Arms

That stands for Meridian Grand Tourney, where I was given an honorific.  It’s called an Award of Arms.  This is what the commemorative scroll looks like. (It was illuminated and calligraphed by Melbrigda, a friend in my shire, which is really nice.) This means you can call me Lady Greet, now.  I have a nice embossed copper circlet that King Maximillian had a bit of trouble getting on my head – those piles of braids, you know. My favorite part of being called up in court, was when I got myself knelt on the cushions, King Max said, “Hi, Greet!” … Continue reading Back from MGT – Award of Arms

Device banner

I made a personal banner for Daggers & Hemlock, to help contribute to the festiveness of the room, even though my device hasn’t yet passed.  (The banner was easy and cheap to make, and if I have to change it, I will.) But when my banner was up with the others, I didn’t like how I’d made it.  I’d embroidered outlines of the bees on, because I wanted them to show on both sides equally, and I wasn’t sure about whether the outline would be important in identifying the insects as bees, and thought I might outline them in dark … Continue reading Device banner

Coughs but garb progress

Okay, what did people call bronchitis in the Middle Ages?  Warning, medical experimentation ahead. Clearly brought on by a case of burning the candle at both ends of the day in prep for Daggers & Hemlock.  First it was a sore throat, and then a head full of goo, and now it’s fatigue with coughing.  From my experience with bronchitis (after chickenpox) for three weeks in 11th grade, and bronchitis (in Italy) for three weeks during graduate school, and then a return of bronchitis (don’t remember how long) while I was doing the bulk of the writing of my master’s … Continue reading Coughs but garb progress

Peach mead!part2

Racking the mead again. I missed the first racking of the mead, it happened after we all dragged ourselves in from RUM, but Lavena looked at the carboy and decided it was time to separate the mead from the peach/yeast sediment. That light stuff is the sediment. Lavena and Cato are washing the 3 and 1 gallon carboys that the mead will go into.  Chlorox is involved. This is Lavena washing out the siphon with cheap vodka. Here goes the siphoning!  I missed the start of the siphon, but it looks like they just used the dissimilar level method to get … Continue reading Peach mead!part2

OT: Back from Southern Indiana

As you can see, I had a grand ol’ time fending off the cow rustlers in Southern Indiana.  Elk steaks are yummy.  Shooting a rifle is not that horrible.  Shooting a .22 pistol is.  I prefer a helmet on an ATV.  Antiques and real estate there are CHEAP.  Local wines made from all sorts of things are, er, effective.  And although the weather was hot… it’s some beautiful country.  I’m going to look for SCAdian events located in Kentuckiana. Peach mead!

7/23/07Update!  Here’s what the mead looked like after RUM. It’s still bubbling in that lefthand picture.  The bucket on the right probably holds seven gallons. ——————————————- Lavena is an accomplished vintner.  I’ve enjoyed her products several times, and she’s complained about adjusting to a different agricultural rhythm, here at 30dN. So I commented the other day – "It’s cheap peach time, you know."  So last Sunday, I brought a box of Chilton County (between Montgomery and Birmingham, 209 miles) peaches and a bag of lemons, and she proceeded to direct Melbrigda and Cato and I through the process. Basically, you … Continue reading Peach mead!
